- Per the original Discharge Certificate, copy of which was recorded in Discharge Book 4, p. 223, in the Letcher County Clerk's Office on 7 April 1947, he was inducted into the U.S. Army at Whitesburg on 8 May 1946. He served 10 months and 21 days as a clerk-typist, stationed at Ft. Custer, MI.
He was discharged at Ft. Sheridan, IL, on 28 Mar 1947. The honorable discharge was granted as part of the general demobilization of the Army. His rank at discharge was T/5.
The original discharge papers are in the possession of Dan Mohn.

- By Order to Report for Induction issued on 16 Nov 1953, he was ordered to report for reinduction into the Army on 2 December 1953. He reported for training at Ft. Knox, KY. As a result of recurrent medical problems associated with a pre-existing hip injury, he was granted honorable discharge on 25 Feb 1954.

- His remains were cremated at the Lexington Cemetery Crematory (Cremation Cert. #5509).
At his request, his remains were cremated and scattered near the Hazard Area Vocational School. A memorial marker has been placed adjacent to the grave of his father in the Thornton Cemetery.
