    • The marriage license application for Bird Franklin and Nancy Middleton provides no background on Nancy or her parents or prior marital status. However, Nancy Middleton appears twice in the 1860 Census of Letcher County, KY, as the spouse of David Middleton. The second enumeration of the household occured late in the year, two households away from Bird and Agnes Franklin. Presumably, the Middleton family moved during the time census information was being gathered, and became neighbors to the Franklins on Crafts Colly.

      The two enumerations for the family contained different reported ages, but it is clear that this is the same family in both instances. The reported ages will be listed with the earlier enumeration first and data from the later one in parentheses:
      David Middleton, head of household, age 24 (27), born in KY
      Nancy Middleton, wife, age 20 (21), born in KY
      Mary Middleton, daughter, age 4 (5), born in KY
      Sarah Middleton, daughter, age 3, born in KY
      Elizabeth Middleton, daughter, age 6 mo., born in KY (listed only in second enumeration).

      The Index of Marriages for Letcher County, KY, lists the marriage of Burd (sic) Franklin and Nancy Middleton on August 22, 1878. Presumably Nancy was widowed by that date.
