  • Notes
    • The earliest public record for Bird Franklin appears in the marriage records of Scott County, Virginia. The marriage of Bird Franklin to Agnes Stallard was recorded on 15 January, 1827.

In 1834, Bird Franklin entered a claim to 100 acres of land on the head of Stallards Creek, a south branch of the Clinch River, Scott County, Virginia. The claim was entered under Treasury Warrant #11172 dated March 4, 1834.

On 2 July 1835 in Deed Book 5, p. 173 of Scott County, Virginia, an indenture was recorded between Lucy Stallard and Bird Franklin, whereby:
"...the said Lucy Stallard for and in consideration of the sum of thirty five dollars good and lawful money of the Commonwealth to her in hand paid at and before the delivery of these presents by the said Bird Franklin... have bargained and sold and by these presents doth grant bargain and sell unto the said Bird Frankling (sic) all the right title and interest that the said Lucy hath to her father Walter Stallard's estate being one thirteenth part of the said estate..."

On 9 September 1836, in Deed Book 4, p.379 of Scott County, Virginia, an indenture between William Powers and Bird Franklin was recorded whereby:
"...in consideration of the sum of thirty dollars to him in hand paid the receipt whereof is acknowledged, has this day bargained granted and sold, and by these presents doth grant bargain sell and convey unto the said Bird Franklin all the Powers interest in the lands of Walter Stallard dec'd and the said William Powers is one of the heirs of the said Stallard..."

In Deed Book 6, p. 146 of Scott County, Virginia, a conveyance of date 26 October 1837 by Bird and Agnes Franklin et al was made to James Stallard, representing a partial distribution of their interest in the Walter Stallard properties. Another conveyance entered into on 17 September 1837 and recorded at Deed Book 6, p. 148, was made by Bird and Aggie Franklin et al to Noah Greer.

Bird Franklin also figured in the disposition of the personal estate of Walter Stallard. The Report of Sale of Personal Estate recorded in Scott County Will Book 2, p. 164, entered 20 June 1834, records Bird as the purchaser of the following: "...to 1 sorrel horse $26.00; to 1 roan horse 36.00; to 1 cow and calf 11.00; to 1 barrel, tub & churn 00.50..." A further Report of Sale of Personal Estate was entered in W.B. 2, p. 183 on 7 March 1835, listing "Bird Franklin to 2nd lot of corn $8.12 1/2..."

As to the Settlement of Accounts for Walter Stallard (W.B. 2, p.192): "To property advanced by decedent to Bird Franklin as per appraisement exhibited by Adminrs. but still retained by them...$36.25..."

From "History of the Pound (Virginia)", published by the Historical Society of the Pound, there are two references to Bird Franklin as a resident of the head of Indian Creek at least as late as 1858. At page 45, this book says: "Byrd Franklin was an early settler on the Sepulcher Branch of Rocky Fork whose land extended across to Indian Creek according to Deed Book 1, Page 65, dated Nov. 28, 1858." Further reference indicates that his property is "what is now known as the John Salyer place". Also, at page 41, reference is made to "Randolph (Hubbard)...lived on the head of Indian Creek on Byrd Franklin's land in 1858."

On January 6, 1873, a deed was recorded in Letcher County, KY, to Bird Franklin, as grantee, for a tract of land on Colly Creek. The grantors were Shade and Elizah Franklin. The deed was dated November 7, 1872.

On July 27, 1881, a deed was recorded from Bird and Nancy Franklin, grantors, to John Middleton, grantee, for 75 acres on Lickrock Branch of Crafts Colly, Letcher County, KY. The deed was dated January 21, 1881.
